A Personal Trainers Worst Nightmare…..
As a personal trainer in Sydney I do a lot of exercise with my clients and for my own fitness as well. This intense level of exercise has created an high level of fitness but also lead so some injury over the years. Nothing that has lead me to go under the knife, which i am very thankful for but in the last few months since I have been running on the soft sand in bondi I have been have very sore knees some times even for days afterwards.
This has lead me to investigate the causes of sore knee from over exercise or what many call runners knee to help gain a better under standing of why my knees are hurting and what exercise can can do to help prevent this from happen or even getting worse and this is what I discovered.
Chondromalacia patellae or more commonly know as runners knee is in a nut shell, soft cartilage under the knee cap. This wearing away of the cartilage can lead to extreme pain and if left untreated can lead to a total destruction of the cartilage all the together.
The three main cause of the this condition are
- Overpronation which means your feet rotating to far inwards on impact. This can also lead to the knee cap twisting and dislocating
- Weakness in the quadriceps that create a lack of support for the knee cap which stops the knee cap from moving smoothly
- A tight illiotibial band or ITB which creates tension in the knee cap.
To the my dismay the main treatment of the this condition is to stop running altogether and strengthening of the muscles in the leg focusing on the quadriceps. This will something that I find difficult because I need to run every day.
During my research into this condition I stumbled a upon a video that I found on you tube that you might find interesting.Check it out.
